Celebratory Post: 9000 hits!

Alright, NPCs. You now the routine. Line up against the wall…

Cuz it’s time for our trendy celebratory post! We’ve just hit 9000 views and of course the credit goes entirely to myself to you, our faithful readers and commenters. Thanks for being their for our Mage academy. We’re encouraged by your interactions with us.

Speaking of, we’ve been having a great response to our recent review of Team Ico’s Shadow of the Colossus. It’s wonderful to know that this game has impacted so many people and that it’s as beloved as it is across the board. So for our celebratory post today, why don’t we take a peep at some of the concept art and design work for Shadow of the Colossus?

Most fascinating of all, the following art demonstrates that back when this game was in development and known as Nico (short for Next-Ico) the sequel to Ico, they were playing around with a few ideas that didn’t make it into the game. Some concept art shows the protagonist for scale but with large horns on his head. A variety of abandoned design-lines like a more warthog-looking colossus, a slew of worms and serpents, and some climbing, ape-like monstrosities can be seen.

Fumito Ueda originally wanted 48 colossi in the game, but as awesome of a marathon as that would’ve been, they wisely opted for a “less is more” approach for the entire aesthetic of the game, bosses included. Some of these concepts just didn’t make the cut. But hey, the finished product ended up being one of the best things ever!

I’ll say it again: If you haven’t played Shadow of the Colossus (or Ico), you really need to. Especially in preparation for The Last Guardian.

    • I’ve slowed down in my old age, Alfred… I mean, Nick. Actually my posts have slowed a little bit as a possible career move ramps up, but these encouraging comments keep steam in my engine (so to speak, since I am not a sentient locomotive). Thanks much!

  1. Congrats on 9000 hits, that’s a big accomplishment!

Ico is one of my favorite games of all time, but I never managed to make my way through Shadow of the Colossus. Even picked up the HD collection on PS3 the day it came out. I’m easily side-tracked. It’s on my to-do list before The Last Guardian comes out though.
