Good morning, America.
This is not going to be some kind of political tirade or a mirror for the explosive responses lighting up Twitter and social media. I’ll cut right to the point.
We’re still one nation. No two presidential candidates have ever been so despised in our lifetimes. The outcome of the election was bound to disappoint, to split the country in two, and to deepen the divide between the people. We should’ve expected to see talk of hatred and riots, and the appearance of #notmypresident, but we don’t have to emulate that ourselves. Burning the flag? Really?
Regardless of your political affiliation, you’re still an American (excluding of course our readers overseas!). We have the task ahead of us of healing the divide and getting over disappointment. We can’t expect any one president-elect to fix it. Certainly not from any one of those candidates.
Black Mage, White Mage, Red Mage… we’re all party members no matter our political party. What our country needs right now is empathy, compassion, healing and inspiration. Love. Loving your neighbor as yourself. “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)
Mutual respect. Showing grace. Overcoming darkness with light.
America needs a voice like Martin Luther King Jr., who said:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
This is no longer about winning or losing, about right or left. This is now about the future of our country and whether we want that to be characterized by further division, exits, and hatred, or by every man and woman doing their part to bring us all together. There are greater threats out there in the world than you and I. As President Obama said, we are patriots first.
This is a story that has been told over and over. We can put aside our disagreements and band together to fight the dragons.
